About This Experience

The only Hadrian's Wall tour on this site that starts in the Lake District, which makes it the answer for anyone basing a trip in Windermere or Ambleside rather than Northumberland. It is a long drive each way, and the itinerary is built to make the journey part of the day rather than an obstacle.

The route runs north through the valleys toward Penrith and on into the Debatable Lands, the lawless border country the Reiver families ran for three centuries. The first stop is Lanercost Priory, a remarkably intact 13th-century Augustinian church built partly from stone robbed out of the Wall, with Burne-Jones windows added in the Victorian restoration.

From there the tour travels alongside the Wall itself. Roughly 73 miles long, it marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire for close to three centuries; it was built over some seven years, with a fort, milecastle or turret at regular intervals along its whole length, and the Vallum earthwork running south of it to mark the edge of the military zone. Most surviving masonry now stands one to two metres high.

The included sites are the Roman Army Museum, on the platform of Carvoran fort, and Vindolanda, where the excavated writing tablets record the frontier garrison's everyday correspondence. Both admissions are covered by the fare. Note the basis before you compare it with anything else here: this tour is priced per person, not per vehicle, which makes it comfortably the most expensive booking on this site.

What is Lanercost Priory?
