The day opens at Housesteads Roman Fort, the most complete Roman fort in Britain, laid out on the escarpment with its barracks, hospital, granaries and famously well-preserved latrines still legible in the ground. From the fort you walk a stretch of the Wall itself along the crags.

Vindolanda follows: the excavated fort and indoor museum that between them cover Roman life before and after the Wall was built, including the writing tablets recovered from the waterlogged ground. There is an option to stop at the Twice Brewed brewery tap nearby for locally brewed ales.

The afternoon changes register entirely, to Corbridge — a village on the Tyne with independent shops, cafes, a riverside walk and Grants Bakery, which locals will tell you is the actual reason to come. The itinerary is adjustable: more hiking, more forts or more museums, as you prefer.

One thing to plan for: the walk up to Housesteads Fort is about 750 metres, much of it steep, and the fort platform itself is uneven. Closer parking can be arranged if you tell the operator in advance.
