A ten-hour run from Edinburgh that gives roughly equal weight to the Scottish Borders and to the Roman frontier, which is the right balance for a first visit — the Borders are the landscape the Wall was built to watch, and seeing them makes the monument legible.
The route follows Dere Street, the Roman road from southern Scotland into Northumberland. Jedburgh comes first, for its ruined 12th-century abbey and the narrow streets around it, then Carter Bar on the ridge of the Cheviots, where the border between the two countries has sat for over seven hundred years.
In Northumberland the tour stops at Steel Rigg for a walk along the Wall on the Whin Sill crags — the stretch where the scale of the thing finally registers, and where you can see exactly why the Romans chose this ridge. Vindolanda is offered as an optional add-on: the excavated fort and museum holding the Roman leather, textiles and writing tablets recovered from its waterlogged ground.
The return north stops at Moffat, a Victorian spa town on the Annan known for its mineral springs and its toffee, before the road runs past the Pentland Hills back into Edinburgh.
