How It Works

How a private Hadrian's Wall tour works.

  1. Say Where You Are Staying

Pickup covers Hexham hotels and the railway station, and on one operator the whole of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham.

  2. Choose Half Day or Full Day

Half days run about 4 hours and cover Vindolanda plus two Wall stops. Full days run 7 to 8 and add the Roman Army Museum or Corbridge.

  3. Shape the Itinerary

More walking, more forts or more museum time — say so when you book rather than on the morning, because some swaps change the route.

  4. Pay Admissions at the Gate

Most private fares cover the vehicle and the guiding but not site entry. The Lake District departure is the exception and includes both its museums.

Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian's Wall Small Group Day Tour SMALL GROUP

Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian's Wall Small Group Day Tour

This tour answers a common planning problem: Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian's Wall are the two things many visitors to Edinburgh most want to see outside the city, and they sit in opposite directions. Pairing them costs a full day but saves booking two.

Edinburgh: Hadrian's Wall & Scottish Borders Day Trip BORDERS ROUTE

Edinburgh: Hadrian's Wall & Scottish Borders Day Trip

A ten-hour run from Edinburgh that gives roughly equal weight to the Scottish Borders and to the Roman frontier, which is the right balance for a first visit — the Borders are the landscape the Wall was built to watch, and seeing them makes the monument legible.

Hexham: Hadrian's Wall Private Tour with Pickup

The most practical answer to the hardest problem on this frontier: reaching the Wall without a car. This private tour collects you from your hotel, B&B or Hexham railway station and returns you there, which no scheduled Wall tour does.

Hadrian's Wall & Corbridge Full Day Private Tour

A private full day that pairs the two best Roman sites on the frontier with a Northumbrian village, and the only tour here offering pickup across Tyne and Wear and County Durham as well as Northumberland — which makes it the realistic private option for anyone based in or near Newcastle.

Hadrian's Wall: Housesteads Roman Fort Entry Ticket

Housesteads is the fort most people picture when they picture Hadrian's Wall: a complete Roman fort platform on an escarpment, with the Wall running away east and west along the crags and nothing but open Northumberland in every direction.

Roman Britain and Hadrian's Wall Private Tour FROM THE LAKES

Roman Britain and Hadrian's Wall Private Tour

The only Hadrian's Wall tour on this site that starts in the Lake District, which makes it the answer for anyone basing a trip in Windermere or Ambleside rather than Northumberland. It is a long drive each way, and the itinerary is built to make the journey part of the day rather than an obstacle.

When a Private Hadrian's Wall Tour Is the Cheaper Option

Per group, not per person — and the one way to reach the Wall without a car that owes nothing to a bus timetable.

Private tours look like the expensive option on this frontier and frequently are not. Two things account for that: how they are priced, and what they solve.

Per group, not per person

The Hexham and Corbridge private tours are charged for the vehicle, not the seat — the Windermere departure is the exception, and is priced per person. A $325 half day from Hexham is $325 whether one person books it or four. At four people that is about $81 each — level with the per-seat guided walk from Cawfields, except you also get a car, a door-to-door pickup and an itinerary you can change.

The crossover is usually around three travellers. Below that, a group tour is cheaper. At four, private is competitive on price and better on everything else. It is worth doing that arithmetic before dismissing the headline figure, because search results sort by it and the sorting is misleading here.

The problem private tours actually solve

Reaching the Wall without a car. This is the hardest practical thing about Hadrian’s Wall and it does not get said plainly often enough.

The central sector — the part with the standing masonry and the views — sits on the B6318 Military Road, across open moor. Trains run along the Tyne Valley to Hexham and Haltwhistle, but from the station to the forts you need the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall bus, which makes about five journeys a day and whose wider network thins outside roughly March to October. That is a workable day if the timings suit you and a frustrating one if they do not.

A private tour with pickup from Hexham railway station collapses that problem. Take the train to Hexham, be collected at the platform, spend the day on the frontier, be returned to the station. No other booking on this site does that. Our guide to visiting Hadrian’s Wall without a car works through every option including the bus timetable.

Which private tour

The Hexham half or full day ($325) takes a maximum of four and collects from your hotel, B&B or the station. Both versions include Vindolanda and guided stops at two points on the Wall; the full day adds the Roman Army Museum and its 3D film and runs seven to eight hours. Admissions are paid at each gate.

The Corbridge full day ($418) is the one to book from Newcastle — its pickup covers Tyne and Wear and County Durham as well as Northumberland. It runs Housesteads, a walk on the crags, Vindolanda, and then changes register entirely for an afternoon in Corbridge, a Tyne-side village of independent shops and cafes. The itinerary is explicitly adjustable toward more hiking, more forts or more museums. See the Newcastle page.

The Windermere departure ($1,218) is the only Wall tour starting in the Lake District, runs a six-seat Mercedes Viano, and is the one private tour that includes both museum admissions — the Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda. It is also the exception to everything above: it is priced per person, not per vehicle, so party size does not bring the per-head cost down, and at $1,218 each it is the most expensive booking on this site. It also takes in Lanercost Priory, a largely intact 13th-century church built partly from stone quarried out of the Wall. More on the Roman Britain page.

What private buys that group tours cannot

Access arrangements. The walk up to Housesteads is about 750 metres and much of it is steeply uphill, with an uneven fort platform at the top. On a private tour you can ask for parking much closer to the fort. On a coach you get the car park.

Pace. Vindolanda’s live excavation is the sort of thing people underestimate until they are standing over it, and a private day can absorb an extra hour there without wrecking the schedule.

Honest itinerary changes. Ask when you book, not on the morning — several of the swaps change the driving route.

One thing to check before comparing prices: most private fares exclude site admission, while some group tours include it. A $325 private half day plus two Vindolanda tickets is not $325. The best tours page sets the whole field side by side.
