Hadrian's Wall Tours from Hexham

Almost everyone books Hadrian’s Wall from Edinburgh, and the people who get the most out of it book it from Hexham. It is worth making that case properly, because Hexham barely registers in search results next to a city ninety miles further away.

The geography nobody checks

Hexham sits twenty minutes from the central sector — the stretch where the Wall rides the Whin Sill escarpment and where Housesteads, Steel Rigg, Sycamore Gap, Cawfields and Vindolanda all cluster. Chesters Roman Fort at Chollerford is ten minutes north. The B6318 Military Road, built in the 1750s partly on top of the Wall itself, runs west from just above the town.

Compare that with the eleven-hour round trip from Edinburgh, of which about two hours are on the Wall. From Hexham, an entire day can be on the frontier.

It also has a railway station on the Tyne Valley line, with direct trains from Newcastle in about forty minutes and from Carlisle in around an hour. That matters more than it sounds, because it is what makes a car-free Wall trip possible at all.

The tour listed from Hexham runs 10:00 to about 17:00, year-round, and costs around $129. The morning is the central sector on foot with a Roman Britain specialist in reconstructed period dress, working the narrative from both sides of the line — what Britain was like under Rome, and what the tribes north of the Wall made of the people who built it.

The afternoon is where the arithmetic gets good: entry to two Roman museums of your choice is included, from Vindolanda, the Roman Army Museum, Housesteads Roman Fort and Chesters Roman Fort. Two admissions account for a serious share of the fare on their own, and you also get a full day of specialist guiding rather than a stop on a coach route.

One condition: it meets at Cawfields and does not include transport between sites. A car is effectively required. Car parking is about £1 per hour.

Without a car

This is where Hexham quietly beats everywhere else. There is also the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall bus, connecting Hexham and Haltwhistle stations to Chesters, Housesteads, The Sill, Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum. It runs about five times a day for most of the year, with the wider network thinning outside roughly March to October — so it works, but the timetable rather than you decides the shape of the day. Hexham or Haltwhistle

Haltwhistle is closer to the crags and calls itself the centre of Britain. It is also much smaller, with less accommodation and fewer places to eat. If you are driving and want to be five minutes from Cawfields, it works.

Hexham has the station, the range of places to stay, a covered market dating to the Middle Ages, the old gaol, and an abbey whose Anglo-Saxon crypt was built from stone lifted out of the Roman fort at Corbridge — which is a fairly direct illustration of what happened to Roman masonry in this valley. Corbridge itself, ten minutes east, has independent shops, cafes and its own Roman site.
