Hadrian's Wall & the Borders

People book the Scottish Borders as the price of getting to Hadrian’s Wall from Edinburgh. It is worth reframing that, because the Borders are the single thing that makes the Wall comprehensible, and the tours that cross them slowly are better tours than the ones that hurry.

Two frontiers across the same hills

The Wall was built in AD 122 to hold a line across northern Britain. Seventeen centuries later, the border between Scotland and England settled roughly forty miles north of it, across the same hills, for much the same reasons — and was fought over almost as hard.

That is what you drive through. The Border Reivers raided across this country from the late 13th century until the union of the crowns: cattle raids, feuds, protection rackets, conducted more or less continuously by families on both sides of the line. The English words bereaved and blackmail both come out of it. Guides on these routes spend real time on the Reivers, and it is the best possible preparation for standing on the Wall an hour later, because it answers the question the Wall poses — what kind of country needs this?

Carter Bar, where the A68 crosses the ridge of the Cheviots, is the stop where it lands. The border has run through here for about seven hundred years. Dere Street, the Roman road the tours follow south, crossed at much the same point.

Which Borders tours actually reach the Wall

This matters, because four tours share a name shape and two of them never cross into Roman Britain at all.

The Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian’s Wall small-group tour is the one most people want. It solves a real planning problem: Rosslyn and the Wall are the two things visitors to Edinburgh most want to see outside the city and they lie in opposite directions. Rosslyn Chapel is a 15th-century collegiate church whose interior carving is dense enough that no guide gets through a fraction of it, and which has had a steady stream of visitors since The Da Vinci Code. The Roman half is Housesteads, the most complete Roman fort in Britain, with a free walk along one of the most dramatic stretches of the Wall.

It caps at 16 passengers in a Mercedes mini-coach, which is roughly a third of a full-size coach and the reason it holds 4.82 across more than 300 reviews. One thing to budget for: neither admission is included. You pay at Rosslyn and again at Housesteads, on top of the fare.

The Alnwick Castle and Scottish Borders tours do not reach Hadrian’s Wall. They share the first hour — same Borders, same Reiver history — and then turn east for Holy Island, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castle, which stood in for Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Holy Island is reached across a tidal causeway, so the operator moves it between morning and afternoon depending on that day’s low water. It is a genuinely good day out. It is not a Roman one.

What the Borders add on the way home

Both Wall routes stop at Jedburgh, whose roofless 12th-century Augustinian abbey is one of four great Borders abbeys founded under David I and still has most of its structure standing. The Rosslyn route lunches at Melrose, where Robert the Bruce’s heart is said to be buried in the abbey — a short walk from the centre, though admission is separate and there is not always time, so ask your guide before committing.

None of this is filler. An eleven-hour day that spends nine hours getting to and from two hours of Wall sounds like poor value until you have crossed the ground the Wall was watching. Then it reads as the right proportion.
